Kia turned her music down as she entered the library then quickly wished she hadn't as the tidal wave of conversations hit her. She shuddered but didn't turn her music up again. She could see some people she knew, well she knew their names and that was about it, but still. Nearly all of the tables were full but one in the corner was completely empty Kia chose that one to sit down at. The table itself was graffitied but she didn't really care, she was alone.
She sighed and pulled out her book, the library wouldn't have normally been her choice to read at but it was raining and the book would have gotten soaked if she read outside as normal. She sighed again and turned up her music, drowning out the rest of the noise, she'd wanted to tell them to shut up but she just couldn't really then she would have been making the noise. She opened the book and found her place quickly and began to read and pretty soon she had no idea of what was going on around her.

alex smiled as he entered the academy's grand library. a smile always came to his face when he came here. partly because of the overwhelming amount of knowledge that was stored inside the four walls, partly because it was a popular place for people to talk and meet up with friends, and partly because of the old, rustic scent the library had to it. the smile still lingering on his face, alex clicked his iPod off, and stuffed in deep into his pocket.
looking for no one book in particular, alex walked over to some of the shelves and began to run his fingers across them. there was a huge amount of books on each and every one of the shelves, but nothing really leaped out at him as something he would ever want to read. out of curiosity, he walked over to the section about werewolves, and scanned the books on display. alex noticed a book named: "werewolves and their weaknesses." he laughed and picked it off of the shelf, getting rid of the dust with a little bit of vampire power.
alex turned around, quickly scanning the library for somewhere to sit. he was about to leave, and go and read in his dorm, when a table in the corner of the library caught his eye. he noticed one girl sat around it reading. alex shrugged, then made his way over to the table, which wasn't in the best of conditions, and sat down opposite the girl. alex saw that she had headphones in, so he simply smiled at her as he sat down, opened his book and began to read.

Kia almost jumped as a boy sat down near her but managed not to, he smiled at her. She pulled one of her earphones out and turned her music slightly down, she winced inwardly at the sudden noise but instantly ingnored the instinct to turn her music back up and glanced at the book the boy had hold of werewolves and their weaknesses Kia rolled her eyes typical vampire she thought, she didn't know how she knew he was a vampire but she knew. She glanced back at her book and, figuring it was too loud to continue, she turned to the boy. She had a feeling she'd seen him around the school but wasn't too sure on the name "hey" she said quietly, her shyness overpowering her confidence.
She kept hold of her book but made no attempt to read it, she wondered if he would even answer her, some people did some people didn't, but she was comforted by the fact that she had her music if all else failed.

alex had no idea whatsoever why he had chosen this book to read. he already knew everything there was to know about the werewolves. heck, alex knew more about werewolves than he did about his own race, the vampires. that always freaked him out a little bit, but alex had always remembered that old saying: "keep your friends close, and your enemies even closer." that was what alex intended to do. he never let his guard down, even when there wasn't any werewolves around. it was just a natural thing for him.
"hey."
alex looked up from his book, surprised to see that the girl had taken a headphone, and had actually spoken to him. he smiled again. "hey, i'm alex." the smile remained on his face as he finished talking. alex did indeed have a shy side to him, but it only came out on very, very rare occasions. in this situation, alex's shy side was under control. he was naturally a rather confident person, standing out in a crowd and having a large group of friends came easily to him. even so, alex was never cocky. he hated people who abused their high positions like that.
alex looked around as he saw a group of vampires leave a table. he smiled and waved at them as they left the library, and then returned to his book. even though there was an empty table now free, alex chose to stay where he was. firstly, the table was in the far corner of the library, and he had just sat down. and secondly, it was always nice to meet new people, so alex decided to stay sat opposite this girl, hoping that she would speak to him a little more.

"hey, I'm Alex." Kia smiled, she had just worked it out, he was pretty popular really. she shifted in her seat, feeling that she had to say something, she realized she hadn't told him her name yet "oh I'm Kia" she said quickly, her shyness still in control.
Kia had always been shy, as far as she could remember, her sister was the opposite, outgoing and brimming with confidence. Kia had never got how she could just walk over to someone and introduce herself, it seemed wrong and oddly normal but it only looked normal when someone else did it, she couldn't see herself doing it at any time. you've just done it now air head she thought. It dawned on her that this was probably the first- and most likely the last, time that she had started a conversation with someone she didn't know. wow she thought weird.
There was just one problem, now that she had started a conversation she wasn't sure how to continue it, what to say next. She sighed "sorry, I'm a bit too shy for my own good"

after flicking through about half of his book, alex realized that it was simply no good for him. he already knew all of this stuff. it was a good thing for him - knowing your enemy inside out. being able to predict what their next move would be, how they would react. alex hadn't had to use this knowledge yet, as no werewolf had been stupid enough to try and attack him. alex knew that was a good thing, well, at least for the werewolf.
"oh I'm Kia"
alex looked up again and smiled. kia. it was an unusual name, it wasn't a one he had heard before. "hey kia." he said, smiling again. "excuse me." alex stood up, the book tucked underneath his arm. he returned to the werewolf section and placed the book back, telling himself to never, ever look at the thing again. why it had even caught his eye in the first place was beyond him. alex walked over to the vampire section, smiling at a few people he knew as he passed. again, nothing really struck him. shrugging, alex picked a couple of books off the shelf.
he walked back to the table with ease, which was quite impressive considering the size of the books. he set them down on table with quite a large thud, that rippled its way through the library. alex sat down again. "sorry, I'm a bit too shy for my own good" he laughed slightly. "it's ok." he knew that shyness was an incredibly hard thing to overcome. it had taken alex quite a while to accomplish it, if he was being honest. luckily though, he had the right group of friends to get the shyness out o his system.

kia hadn't realised Alex had left until he dropped the books on the table, she'd been lost in her own world. "it's OK." he said, answering her statement, she glanced curiously at the books "any particular reason you picked these up?" she asked, they were old books and very thick, she could only imagine who had thought so strongly of something to write that much about it, without getting bored. She was sure that the people reading it had gotten bored though, the back pages looked like they had never been touched, whereas the front ones were torn and faded, she could smell the dust on the books and she wrinkled her nose with disgust.
She never liked old books, they smelt and they stories were blander and lacking detail in their writing making for an extremely boring and unimaginative read. Though some she had to admit were quite good, Alice in wonderland for example was a good book, even if it was old. She preferred fantasy books though, but then again sometimes it felt like she was living in one. Shape shifters, vampires, werewolves, wizards, all products of fiction but for her and indeed quite a few others around the world, it was real.
She looked at the books again and was surprised they didn't have a layer of dust on them, it smelt like they should. She shook her head Alex probably couldn't even smell it, the down side of being a shape shifter, it would be completely weird if she mentioned a smell that no one else knew about, she shook her head again and sighed softly to herself.

"any particular reason you picked these up?"
alex honestly didn't know why he had picked these books. he put it down to the fact that the librarians hated seeing people in the library who weren't reading. "lets just say i like to know about the races. i know more about werewolves than i do about my own kind, so i thought i'd brush up on my knowledge a little." alex was very glad that he was a vampire and not a werewolf. vampires always had the advantage - mentally and physically. in his mind, vampires were quite simply the superior race.
alex opened one of the old books, only to be greeted by an eruption of dust. no problem, he said to himself. alex raised his hand, turned it towards the window, and watched the dust fly out of it. he smiled - he loved the vampire powers he had inherited. telekinesis was one thing, but alex was able to read minds, without people knowing it. sure, other people who could read minds would know when alex was reading theirs, but it was quite a rare gift, and alex was pleased to have it on his side. he decided to read kia's mind, simply out of curiosity. he bowed his head to look like he was reading, so she wouldn't think anything suspicious. alex got into her head pretty quickly, but he found nothing major. slightly disappointed, he rose his head again, closing the book and placing it back on the table.
he reached out to grab the second book, but one look at the front cover made alex reconsider. it was frayed, worn and, obviously, the library hadn't gotten any new books in a long, long time. alex left it where it was and brought his legs up, sitting cross-legged on the chair. he had picked up on one thing from reading kia's mind, he remembered. "so, you're a witch?" alex asked, even though he knew that he was right. still, there was no point in telling her what she already knew, so alex said it as a question.

Kia resisted the urge to sneeze as Alex opened the books and watched as he made the dust fly out of the window, she guessed that if he had telekinesis he most likely had some other power. Sure enough as he began to read she felt something poke at her mind, for a laugh she let him in, taking care to think of stupid, meaningless things. She didn't smile though, it would seem suspicious and she made sure she thought witch rather than shape shifter, it was easier that way. She wasn't offended by the fact Alex had tried to read her mind, she'd had lots of people try which was what got her into spells about controlling that and now she had perfected them- it was one of the only spells she could keep up for a long length of time, now no one got in without her permission. Most people were idiots anyway, they only tried when she was listening to music, so all they got was music.
Kia watched as Alex closed the first book and went for then second, it was in even worse condition than the first she saw him hesitate and pull back obviously reconsidering she thought, he sat cross legged on the chair. "so, you're a witch?" she smiled "yeah" she started choosing not to mention the other thing, she paused then added "and you're the vampire with telekinesis and the ability to read minds right?" that was all she had picked up so far, for all she knew he could have other powers too. She leaned back in her chair and grinned. Her shyness was disappearing a bit but there still wasn't a lot of confidence in her voice and she knew it.

"yeah, and you're the vampire with telekinesis and the ability to read minds right?"
alex nodded and smiled. it didn't surprise him to learn that kia knew he was reading her mind. wizards and witches were much more adapt to feeling their mind being read than the humans and werewolves. alex hardly ever read the mind of a fellow vampire. simply out of respect. "yeah. i have other powers, too, but i'll not bore you." he smiled again. really, his only other power was the immense strength and speed that most vampires inherited. alex guessed that was why the vampires had won the war. they were too strong, and far too quick for the werewolves.
getting slightly bored by the books on the table, alex decided to read kia's mind again, but subtly this time. he had picked up a technique years ago from an old mage, who showed alex a way to read minds without being detected at all. alex hadn't tried it in a while, but hell, it was worth a shot. he went for it, quickly getting over the defensive wall of kia's mind. he discovered that she was also a shape-shifter. an interesting combination, but not one alex hadn't seen before. he had been a vampire long enough to have seen everything possible.
desperately looking for something to do, alex slowly rocked himself from side-to-side on his chair. "so, what's it like being a shape-shifter as well as a witch?" alex asked through a smile. hopefully, she wouldn't be that surprised, but alex had read her mind discretely, so he knew she would be surprised as to how he found it out. so, waiting for kia to speak, alex simply sat there smiling, rocking himself back and forth on the chair.

"yeah. i have other powers, too, but I'll not bore you."
It didn't surprise her, vampires were often multi talented probably one of the reasons they won that war then she thought, sometimes she didn't get why it had started in the first place she sighed and leaned her elbow on the table, resting her head in her hand. Kia wondered how old Alex was, if he was old enough he would know other ways to enter the mind, she had learned one while spending some brief time in Japan and she knew she couldn't stop things like that entering, she knew she probably wouldn't feel it either.
"so, what's it like being a shape-shifter as well as a witch?" It didn't really surprise her that Alex knew these methods and it probably hadn't surprised him to find she was a shape shifter as well as a witch. He was rocking back wards and for wards in his chair, an unusual thing to do but she didn't say anything. "Clever" she muttered then more audibly "perfectly good" she didn't say anything else, people found it hard to cope with cross breeds but she didn't care about that, it was their problem but she didn't really know what people would say if she told them the truth.
Kia came from an entire family of cross breeds, her father and mothers side was full of them and most of them had kept it a secret. She was actually surprised she wasn't more werewolf both her parents had had it in them and she didn't know where she got witch from only her auntie was a witch. She'd stopped trying to understand a while ago, hoping that she was indeed only a shape shifter and witch. But she wasn't sure and knew that she never would be. At least I'm not a vampire she thought, she had nothing against them but couldn't stand the way they thought they were better than everyone else, her mother was an example of that and she wasn't even full vampire.
Kia never liked the thought of being in other people's heads, it was strange, she'd only done it a couple of times and decided quickly that she wouldn't now. The Japanese monk that had taught her the ways of entering the mind- Kia loved learning new languages and Japanese was her latest at the time, had told her that memories were the hardest to access and she was glad of it, she didn't bother with the barriers around the rest of her mind but silently strengthened the ones around her memories. They were what she hated the most.

"Clever, perfectly good."
alex nodded. hybrids were pretty hard to come by, but alex had seen quite a few. he had seen a wizard-werewolf before. hell, he had even seen the worst sort of hybrid imaginable. it was half-vampire, half-werewolf. alex wondered which side it had picked in the War. hopefully, for its sake, it had picked the vampires. why anybody would want to size with those vile, disgusting werewolves was beyond him. in alex's mind, the werewolves had lost the war before it had even begun.
this time, alex didn't even have to try and read kia's mind to pick up on one of her thoughts. At least I'm not a vampire. alex was, to some extent, offended by what kia was thinking, but chose to not make a big deal out of it. he was usually the type of person to worry about a small problem for too long. then, that once small problem would snowball and become a big one that he couldn't handle. so, this time, he let what kia was thinking go, without saying, or thinking, anything.
alex's mind drifted back to his training. how he looked forward to it every single week. being able to discuss his abilities with other vampires, who had the same abilities, was really comforting for alex. seeing as his mother hated the fact that he was a vampire, his father also. only his brother, jason, had accepted alex as a vampire. alex closed his eyes, thinking about his brother. he watched as jason played games with his mind, screwing up alex's logical thinking. quickly, alex erased jason from his mind, knowing he would cry if he thought about him too long.
he opened his eyes again, and looked at kia. "sorry. just thinking about my brother." if kia asked about his brother, alex knew he would have to answer. he shut his mind, putting up several defensive barriers. he always did that. his guard was never down.

Kia had slipped into her own world while Alex was quiet "sorry. just thinking about my brother." snapped her out of it. She guessed by the way his tone was as he said it that his brother had died. Kia sensed him putting barriers up in his mind, something in the air her animal instincts came in handy a lot. She lifted her eyebrows, she put her own barriers back up I don't know why I'm even bothering she thought skeptically he can get inn anyway, stupid ancient vampires can't respect other peoples privacy.
That was one of the reasons she kept out of other peoples heads, she figured if they wanted to tell her they would, that was why when normal people had tried to read her mind in the past she would often give them a punch- with air they literally didn't know what hit them. Then again she thought why is he bothering? surely he knows that I can do that weird barrier hopping thing? she shrugged and decided she wouldn't dwell on it.
She also decided not to ask anything about his brother either, that was his buisness not hers "I have a sister" she said quietly, remembering the fearful night where she had almost lost her. She squashed the memory and put it back in the box that she used to lock things like that away. She smiled, more to herself than to Alex "we're twins" she said she sighed "but we couldn't be more opposite."

alex couldn't help but think about jason. why did he have to die? he was the only person, ever, back at alex's home who accepted him. his mother and father simply blocked him out of their lives. after alex read each of their minds a few times, he could tell that they wanted nothing to do with him anymore. but jason was always there. he talked to alex, comforted him. but when alex had turned thirteen, jason was hit by a car and killed. it destroyed alex, mentally and emotionally.
shaking his head, alex quickly wiped a tear away, and began putting up more barriers in his mind. these weren't just your average barriers that a wizard would put up. these were vampire barriers. these were practically impenetrable. and if somebody ever did get in, alex would know, and he could get them out easily enough. there was only ever one person alex allowed into his head freely. but since she went away, he allowed nobody in, at all. if they managed to get in, they had to explain to alex, or he would make things rather uncomfortable for them.
"I have a sister"
glad that the topic had drifted past his brother, alex looked up and smiled. "we're twins but we couldn't be more opposite. he laughed slightly. usually, with twins, everybody expected them to be the same in every single way. but he knew most twins weren't like that at all. although, alex was curious if kia's twin was the same as her in one way. "is she a hybrid too?" he asked, not wanting to sound nosy - just curious. hopefully, kia would know what "hybrid" meant, but if she didn't, he would explain. alex smiled slightly. that's the kind of person he was - always willing to help.

Kia felt the strenghening of his barriers and shuddered. She heard him laugh but to her ears it sounded a little bit arkward. "Is she a hybrid too?" Kia smiled to herself "yeah we're the same in that sort of way, just personality wise we're different"
Completely different she thought, thinking of Roxi's choice of friends and the fact that, unlike Kia she never used magic, she hated it, she would shift occasionally but that was it. Kia found it impossible not to shift sometimes, she had read that animals minds were more protected than humans but she couldn't be sure no one had ever tried to read her mind in animal form, apparently it was something to do with instincts. She shook her head to clear her thoughts but it only brought back memories of Roxi, back to that night. Kia shuddered and shook her head again, more violently and thought of some japanese words to take her mind off it. It worked too, she sighed with relief.
She looked across at Alex she knew that if she hadn't stopped thinking then she would have shifted defensively, it happened a lot, especially around people that weren't ordinary humans. She balled her hands quickly into fists and put them underneath the table, it probably looked weird but she didn't really care.
